He who controls the time controls the money — that could be the mantra for those who start small businesses, according to a new survey by SurePayroll, an online business services provider.

The survey found that entrepreneurs start their own businesses for two principle reasons: to control earning potential (28.9 percent) and to control their own time (22.3 percent).

"This survey reveals that people who start businesses are doing so primarily to gain control of their own destiny," says SurePayroll President Michael Alter. "More than anything else, they want to be responsible for how much money they make and how many hours they work — even if it means working more hours and making less money."

Among the other most frequently cited reasons were: to follow a passion (16.3 percent); to avoid working for someone else (12.3 percent); and to grow something from the ground up (7.7 percent).

I've been a small business owner for about 10 years and I'm motivated by profits. The more money I make from running a successful business, the happier I become. Every small business owner should be motivated to be successful at what they do. If you don't feel motivated to run a small business, then you should reconsider your investment.
